Serve, Inform Protect: Stetement

SERVE INFORM PROTEGER is an artistic project based on my experience as an exhibition assistant at the Berardo museum. Working as an exhibition assistant gave me a broader view of the public's perception of art and the place of an artistic institution of modern and contemporary art in society. The exhibition assistant is in the gap between the exterior and interior of the museum. From the outside in, it is the agent of interaction between the public and the museum. From the inside out, it is at the bottom of the food chain and observes the internal dynamics of the different departments. The exhibition assistant has contact with all departments but always from a distance. Without any power or responsibility, apart from SERVE INFORM and PROTECTING, it is never seen as threat or mistrust, which confers a unique freedom and lightness within the structure. From my "observation tower" daily I experience the behaviors of the visitors inside the museum, as they travel through the exhibition space and the interactions with the works of art. Many beliefs and myths I had about how the public sees the art have been broken, which is a real life lesson for an artist.

SERVIR INFORMAR PROTEGER é um projecto artístico sobre a minha experiência como assistente de exposição no museu Berardo. Trabalhar como assistente de exposição deu-me uma visão mais abrangente sobre a percepção da arte por parte do público e o funcionamento de uma instituição artística de arte moderna e contemporânea. O assistente de exposições está na charneira entre o exterior e o interior do museu. De fora para dentro, é o agente de interacção entre o público e o museu. De dentro para fora, está no fundo da cadeia alimentar e observa a dinâmica interna dos diferentes departamentos. O assistente de exposição tem contacto com todos os departamentos mas sempre com um distanciamento. Sem qualquer poder ou responsabilidade, para além de SERVIR INFORMAR e PROTEGER, nunca é visto como ameaça ou desconfiança, o que confere uma liberdade e leveza únicas dentro da estrutura. Da sua “torre de observação” diariamente vivencia os comportamentos dos visitantes dentro do museu, como percorrem o espaço expositivo e as interacções com as obras de arte. Muitas crenças e mitos que eu tinha sobre a forma como o público vê a arte foram desfeitos, o que é uma verdadeira lição de vida para um artista.
